Late goals from substitutes secure Ajax victory over Atalanta

Ajax fans had to be patient on Thursday evening as their team faced a stubborn Atalanta side in a high-stakes Conference League fixture. For the vast majority of the match, the score remained level, with the Italian visitors successfully neutralizing Ajax's attacking movements through a disciplined defensive structure. The atmosphere inside the Johan Cruijff Arena remained tense as the clock ticked past the hour mark without a breakthrough.

Impact from the bench

Managerial decisions proved to be the difference-maker as the game entered its final stages. Head coach Francesco Farioli looked to his bench for inspiration, introducing Tolu Arokodare and Abdellah Ouazane to inject fresh energy into the forward line. This tactical shift altered the tempo of the match almost immediately, forcing the Atalanta defense into uncomfortable positions for the first time all evening.

It was Tolu Arokodare who finally shattered the stalemate with a clinical finish from inside the box. After a chaotic scramble following a corner kick, the substitute reacted quickest to poke the ball past the goalkeeper. The roar from the home crowd was deafening, as the breakthrough goal released the pressure that had been building for seventy minutes.

Football is a game of fine margins where the bench players must be ready to change the entire narrative in just a few minutes of play.

Abdellah Ouazane, the second of the pivotal substitutes, sealed the win moments before the final whistle. His composed strike doubled the lead and ensured that all three points would stay in Amsterdam. This second goal arrived as a result of a rapid counter-attack that caught the Italian side off guard while they were desperately pushing numbers forward in search of an equalizer.
