Members of the Davy Crockett shooting club in the small village of Meterik are reeling after a catastrophic fire destroyed their handcrafted saloon last night. The building, which served as a labor of love for the group, was completely leveled just one day after its grand opening celebration. The club had spent seven months constructing the facility to mark their 60th anniversary. ## A Dream Turned to Ash The tragedy began late in the evening during a packed launch party attended by roughly 150 members, friends, and sponsors. Around 11:30 PM, witnesses noticed smoke emanating from within the walls of the wooden structure. Organizers acted quickly to evacuate the premises, ensuring that every guest made it out safely before the flames consumed the building. > Our pride has burned to the ground and that causes real pain. Club chairman Jan Joosten expressed his heartbreak while surveying the smoldering ruins the following morning. Despite desperate attempts by members to dampen the flames with garden hoses, the fire had already taken hold of the insulation materials. By the time emergency services arrived, it was clear that the structure could not be saved. ## Community Resilience The saloon was a highly detailed project that reflected the club's passion for North American history. It featured custom Western-style artwork and thematic decorations like wagon wheels, though the members deliberately omitted iconic swinging doors to keep the walkways clear for serving drinks. Fortunately, the adjacent stone shooting range remained largely intact, though it did suffer significant water damage during the firefighting efforts. For international residents and expats, this event highlights the immense value of local volunteerism in Dutch villages. While this specific incident does not directly impact daily life for those living in major cities, it serves as a reminder of how social clubs and associations form the backbone of local life in smaller Dutch communities. Joosten stated that they are waiting for official reports from fire experts, but they are fully insured and fully committed to the task ahead. They plan to clear the site and start construction again, confirming that they intend to build another wooden saloon from the ground up.
